Top Endometriosis Myths Debunked: What Every Woman Should Know

Women have been told for many years to simply bear the pain of menstruation. In many families, it’s been normalised and overlooked as a normal experience, rather than as a symptom that warrants a doctor’s visit. The problem is that this silent experience has led to many cases of endometriosis and other conditions going undiagnosed for many years. This blog addresses misconceptions related to endometriosis, especially those concerning menstrual pain, infertility, and home remedies that actually just treat the symptoms and not the cause.

MYTH 1: “Severe period pain is normal. Every woman goes through it.”

FACT: Mild cramps can be common, but severe, disabling period pain is not normal.

If your periods cause pain that:

  • Disrupts daily activities
  • Requires strong painkillers every month
  • Makes it difficult to work, study, or even get out of bed…

… it may indicate an underlying condition like endometriosis. Endometriosis is when tissue like the lining of the uterus develops elsewhere outside the uterus, causing inflammation, pain, and scarring. Women have had endometriosis for years because doctors have told them that pain is simply “part of womanhood.” In reality, pain that interferes with life deserves medical attention, regardless of age or marital status.

MYTH 2: “Pain during periods will reduce after marriage or childbirth.”

FACT: Marriage or pregnancy does not cure endometriosis.

This is a deeply ingrained but medically misguided belief. Although hormonal changes during pregnancy may cause a temporary remission of symptoms, endometriosis is a chronic disease. Symptoms may return after childbirth, and sometimes, they may progress. The reliance upon significant life events and not a medical diagnosis may cause a late diagnosis and a progression of the disease. A patient with endometriosis does not need a milestone-based treatment.

MYTH 3: “If scans are normal, nothing serious is wrong.”

FACT: Endometriosis often does not show clearly on routine ultrasounds.

Women are often told their results are “normal” and go home with pain medication. In early endometriosis or deep lesions, there may be little to see with standard imaging. The diagnosis of endometriosis is often beyond standard imaging and may require laparoscopy. A “normal” result doesn’t exclude pain. The symptom of pain is as valid as laboratory results.

MYTH 4: “Painkillers, hot water bags, and home remedies are enough.”

FACT: Temporary relief is not treatment.

Some common remedies, such as pain medication, heat treatment, herbal teas, or simply taking it easy, can provide relief, but that is only temporary in nature. They are not really treating endometriosis at all. However, when one becomes accustomed to taking too many pain medications while endometriosis quietly advances, it becomes necessary to assess the cause of such discomfort, especially when one notices that one is planning one’s entire life in order to manage such discomfort.

MYTH 5: “Endometriosis only matters if you want to get pregnant.”

FACT: Endometriosis affects quality of life, not just fertility.

Whereas endometriosis does have implications for fertility, it has many other implications in addition to fertility. It includes pelvic pain, pain during menstruation, pain during intercourse, bowel or bladder pain, among others. Endometriosis does not just affect women who have yet to have children. Also, it must not be treated only when a woman wishes to bear a child. In fact, it must be treated at the earliest to avoid other long-term complications in the future and improve overall well-being.

  • Regular use of painkillers without diagnosis is a warning sign.
