Overview of role of Laparoscopy in subfertility field
- Diagnostic Laparoscopy in many cases can rule out the cause of infertility by direct visualising the uterus, fallopian tubes, ovaries and rest of pelvis and abdomen.
- An operative laparoscopy includes surgical intervention for abnormalities discovered during a diagnostic procedure using tiny surgical tools.
Indications of Diagnostic laparoscopy
- As a part of the infertility evaluation
- Ruling out uterine, fallopian tubes and ovarian abnormalities
- Fallopian tube patency check
- Diagnosis of pelvic adhesions
- Pelvic inflammatory disease
- Endometriosis (which can only be diagnosed by laparoscopy)
Operative laparoscopy is done for the following
- Endometriosis excision (laparoscopic excision of endometriosis-LAPEX surgery)
- Adenomyoma-endometriosis of uterine wall (laparoscopic Adenomyomectomy)
- Uterine Fibroids (laparoscopic myomectomy)
- Removal of ovarian cyst ( laparoscopic ovarian cystectomy)
- Thin PCOD patients- laparoscopic ovarian drilling
- Adhesions due to previous surgery or infections (lap adhesiolysis)
- Tubal recanalization ( laparoscopic tuboplasty)
- To treat prolapsed uterus ( laparoscopic rectopexy)
- Radical trachelectomy done for early stages of cervical cancer
